Ear Training for Piano Beginners

Good ear training connects sound to action. Keep exercises musical and short enough that you can practice them every day.

Pitch matching

Play one note, sing it, then find the same pitch in another octave. This develops attention before formal interval drills.

Interval direction

Play two notes and identify whether the second rises or falls. Later, name the interval.

Practical checkpoint: Choose one idea from this section and try it at the keyboard before moving on. Piano skills become useful through application, not just reading.

Chord quality

Practice distinguishing major, minor and dominant-seventh colors. Use the keyboard to immediately confirm what you heard.

Apply it to music

Take one short melody or chord change from a song and work it out without notation. Application is what turns drills into musicianship.
