How to Learn Songs by Ear on Piano

Break the song into layers: structure, bass, chords, melody and rhythm. Solving one layer at a time is faster than guessing at everything simultaneously.

Map the form

Identify repeated sections such as verse, chorus and bridge. You may discover that much of the song reuses the same harmonic material.

Find the bass movement

Bass notes often reveal chord roots or at least the direction of the harmony. Start there before trying to identify full chord voicings.

Practical checkpoint: Choose one idea from this section and try it at the keyboard before moving on. Piano skills become useful through application, not just reading.

Sing the melody

If you can sing a short phrase accurately, you have a better chance of finding it on the keyboard. Work in tiny fragments.

Check your transcription

Play along with the recording at reduced speed if possible. Listen for clashes rather than assuming the first plausible chord is correct.
