How to Learn Piano Without a Teacher

Learning without a weekly teacher is possible when you replace the teacher’s functions: sequence, feedback, accountability and problem diagnosis.

Use a sequence

Do not build your education from random videos. Pick a curriculum or roadmap and stay with it long enough to see whether it works.

Record yourself

A phone recording reveals timing problems, unevenness and hesitation that can disappear while you are concentrating on playing.

Slow down before repeating

Repeated mistakes become practice too. Reduce the tempo or the size of the passage until the correct movement is easy enough to repeat.

Know when to get outside help

Persistent pain, tension, confusing technique or a long plateau are good reasons to book a lesson with a qualified teacher even if your main path is self-directed.
