How to Practice Piano Effectively

Effective practice isolates the exact problem, slows it down, and repeats the correct version. Time at the piano matters less than the quality of the repetitions.

Name the problem

Instead of ‘this bar is hard,’ decide whether the problem is fingering, rhythm, a leap, reading, memory or coordination.

Shrink the task

Practice two beats, one hand, or one transition. When that is reliable, reconnect it to the surrounding music.

Use tempo as a diagnostic

Slow enough that you can play accurately without tension. Increase speed in small steps only after several clean repetitions.

Alternate drilling and performance

Drilling fixes details; full run-throughs test continuity. Both are necessary, but they serve different purposes.
